In the middle of 1970 the Grateful Dead recorded the second of two albums that would turn what the world thought of the band’s music on its ear, the more singer-songwriter oriented American Beauty. The latest edition of Spotify Landmark features guitarist Bob Weir and producer Steve Barncard sharing the inside story behind the recording of American Beauty and we’d imagine that even the most well-versed Deadhead will learn something from episode.

Each show blends intimate interviews with artists, producers, industry figures and celebrities to create a listening history of legendary albums, concerts and events. The American Beauty episode finds Weir and Barncard discussing each and every track on the LP including Bobby’s thoughts on the “missing” verse of “Friend Of The Devil” and why “Operator” makes him wonder what Pigpen would’ve come up as a songwriter had he not died.
