Spafford brought their SpaffSki Tour 2024 to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, kicking off with four sold-out shows at Old Town Pub in Steamboat Springs. Saturday’s third show of four featured Umphrey’s McGee keyboardist Joel Cummins joining the band for a cover of a song by ‘90s rockers Filter.
Cummins was brought out for the final song of Saturday’s first set and joined Spafford’s keyboardist Cory Schechtman. Umphrey’s McGee welcomed Schechtman (on saxophone) at JamBase's 25th Anniversary celebration last year at Soundcheck Studios. Drummer Nick Tkachyk, who was celebrating his birthday, handled lead vocals on the Cummins-assisted performance of Filter’s hit “Take A Picture.”

After the set break that followed Cummins’ sit-in, longtime Spafford collaborator Chuck Johnson presented a reading of his poem, “Road To Myself.” The four-song second set saw Spafford dial up “The Postman,” a techno version of Stone Temple Pilot’s “Plush,” and “Electro Taco Stand” encapsulating a performance of “Alternate Ending.”
“The sound of Spafford is organic and unobstructed,” Tkachyk said of the current state of the band. “Creative, energetic, rhythmic and trance oriented, almost hypnotic in the way we improvise.”
Spafford heads across the range to the Public House in Crested Butte for four more SpaffSki shows spanning February 29 through March 3.
