Spafford premiered pro-shot, full-show video of their November 16 concert at the High Dive in Gainesville, Florida. About halfway through a single two-hour set, the quartet delivered a tribute to hometown hero — the late great Tom Petty.
Spafford kicked things off with a pairing of tunes debuted in 2017, “Lovesick Melody” and “Soil,” together stretching to 17 minutes. Another 2017 debut, “It’s A Bunch,” came next and clocked in at around 20 minutes. Then the band really got “Comfortable,” kicking back on The Gaff Tapes track for 27 minutes.
Next, Spaff delivered the Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers classic “Breakdown.” Keyboardist Andrew “Red” Johnson, who recently announced his departure from the band, laid down the electric piano over bassist Jordan Fairless and drummer Nick Tkachyk’s rhythmic foundation. Guitarist Brian Moss then layered in Mike Campbell’s iconic riff and also handled lead vocals before delivering a fiery solo.
The band explored a bit of a “Breakdown” jam before keeping up the covers with just their third rendering of The Lumineers’ “Brightside.” The staple “Weasel” then prefaced a set-closing segment of new tune “Diesel Driver” which flowed into “Todd’s Tots” to wrap the set. Spafford returned to encore with “Left On The Runway,” which appears on their new album, Simple Mysteries, alongside “Diesel Driver.”
