Daniel Donato welcomed Spafford to his hometown of Nashville on Friday night. The Cosmic Country guitarist sat in with the Arizona-bred jam quartet on “Ain’t That Wrong” at the end of their first set at Basement East.
The 12-minute “Ain’t That Wrong” marked the first live collaboration between Spafford and Daniel Donato. Spafford guitarist Brian Moss gave Donato plenty of space to let the fretboard fireworks fly on his Telecaster throughout the adventurous jam. Moss linked up with the Nashville resident towards the end of the Spafford classic for a fierce and climactic duel.
Spafford prefaced the guest appearance with a sequence linking well-jammed versions of live staples “Double Time,” “Broken Wing” and “Windmill.” A cover of Scissor Sisters’ “Take Your Mama,” the shortest song of the night, opened the second set. A 21-minute take on the beloved “Electric Taco Stand” followed before Spafford went back to covers for a performance of Stone Temple Pilots’ “Plush.” The band took “The Postman” deep to end the closing stanza and returned for a “Frog Gossip” encore.
