Solar Flares Edition: Sunwatchers, Our Solar System & Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band
Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band: The Rarity Of Experience
Now that spring is here, it’s time to think sunshine and there are three bright rays of musical bliss coming your way this week, so get your SPF on and don’t get burned! I’ll start with Chris Forsyth & the Solar Motel Band‘s new one, The Rarity Of Experience out on No Quarter. Forsyth is no stranger to the RecommNeds, but with the new one he and his band seemed poised for a guitar-fusion breakthrough. This one is a double-album filled with one classic-rock/Crazy Horse/Dead-esque flare up after another. The band sounds great, Forsyth is on fire and the jams just get better as it goes on. A must-listen.
Sharing a member with the Solar Motel Band and casting its own unique light on the scene is NYC’s Sunwatchers who are out with their manic and awe-inspiring self-titled release on Castle Face. Sunwatchers combine all sorts of elements into one helluva high-energy sound: free jazz chaos, meets Afrobeat’s cyclic grooves, meets exotic psychedelic hypnosis, meets good old punk rock … and you can actually dance to it. It’s thrilling and heady all at once, you’ll definitely want to put your sunglasses on first.
Our Solar System: In Time
Looking at the sun from a different perspective is Our Solar System. The Swedish collective is out with their second album on Beyond Beyond Is Beyond records, In Time, which certainly brings a new perspective to the psych-rock world. If you’re not into 20+ minute long-jammers, then, no, Our Solar System is not for you. But if you’re like me, you’ll be orbiting around the sun listening to these expansive, extraterrestrial musical explorations. Covering almost 45 minutes in just two tracks, In Time balances the little details with the big picture and will have you setting the controls for the heart of the sun. Happy travels!
