Smashing Pumpkins Work Bust Outs Into European Tour Opener

The The Smashing Pumpkins opened their European Tour 2019 on Thursday night at Oslo Spektrum in Oslo, Norway. Billy Corgan and company had plenty of treats in store, as they loaded the setlist with four bust outs and a live debut.

Last night’s concert began with “Soma” from 1993’s Siamese Dream before the band pulled “Siva” and “Rhinoceros” off their debut album, Gish. Next came “Zero” from 1995’s Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness. The run of classics was followed by “Solara” and “Knights Of Malta” from their most recent studio album, Shiny & Oh So Bright Vol. 1.

The first bust out of the evening came nine songs in, as Smashing Pumpkins dusted off “Tiberius” from 2014’s Monuments To An Elegy after nearly five years and 2008 single “G.L.O.W.” for the first time since 2010. “G.L.O.W.” was released at the same time as “Superchrist,” which saw action last night after 11 years on the shelf. Later, the Pumpkins unearthed “The Aeroplane Flies High (Turns Left, Looks Right)” for the first time since 2007 and debuted Shiny & Oh So Bright track “Alienation.”

The rest of last night’s setlist was heavy on hits such as “Bullet With Butterfly Wings,” “Ava Adore,” “1979,” “Cherub Rock” and “Tonight, Tonight.” Smashing Pumpkins did fit in a few covers including a James Iha-sung rendition of The Cure’s “Friday I’m In Love” and The Rolling Stones’ “Street Fighting Man,” which served as the encore along with “Hummer.”
