Mandolin virtuoso Sierra Hull's new single is extremely personal to her. Hull wrote “Spitfire” in tribute to her grandmother and the song’s chorus inspired the title of her forthcoming album, A Tip Toe High Wire.
The self-produced and independently-released A Tip Toe High Wire arrives on March 7 and is Hull’s first new full-length studio album since 2020’s 25 Trips. Sierra worked with longtime collaborator and engineer Shani Gandhi on the LP and is backed by her touring band of Shaun Richardson (guitar), Avery Merritt (fiddle), Erik Coveney (bass) and Mark Raudabaugh (drums).

“Spitfire” showcases Hull on acoustic guitar. “This song is for my Granny,” the Nashville-based musician said in a statement. “She went through so much in her 80 years and there aren’t enough verses to express how she was truly tougher than ‘thorns on a brier.’”
Sierra Hull tells the tale of her grandmother throughout the track. “She was a beautiful, fiery woman who loved her family in the deepest of ways,” Hull added of her granny. “When I need to find some extra strength in my own life, I remember her resilience.” The song follows previously released A Tip Toe High Wire previews “Boom” and “Come Out Of My Blues.”
