John Mayer brought his debut solo acoustic tour to Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Friday. Mayer welcomed Sheryl Crow to duet on her classic “Strong Enough.”
While Mayer has added some variation in his setlists, he went to one of his go-to openers in Nashville, “Slow Dancing In A Burning Room,” ahead of “Shouldn’t Matter But It Does,” on which the guitarist tacked on Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young.” Elsewhere in the first guitar segment, John put together a sign request medley of “Something Like Olivia” “My Stupid Mouth” and “Daughters.”
Following “Walt Grace’s Submarine Test, January 1967,” Mayer switched to piano for a pairing of “New Light” and “You’re Gonna Live Forever In Me.” Mayer wrapped the piano segment with “Changing.” John then returned to guitar for “Stop This Train,” with a Simon & Garfunkel “Homeward Bound” tease and “The Age Of Worry” before welcoming Sheryl Crow.
“I first met her when she was a superstar,” Mayer said of Crow. “And today she is a legend.” Sheryl then emerged with her guitar and began picking out the intro to Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home,” with John joining her on his 12-string acoustic, before heading into the opening strains of “Strong Enough” off her 1993 debut album, Tuesday Night Music Club. Mayer added both rhythm and lead accompaniment on the 12-string and joined Crow in harmony on the choruses.
