Seth Avett Covers Greg Brown’s Minor Leaguer’s Lament ‘Laughing River’

The song appears on The Avett Brothers’ solo tribute album to the Iowa singer-songwriter.

Seth Avett released his cover of Greg Brown’s tale of an unsuccessful minor league baseball player, “Laughing River.” The track will be part of the member of The Avett Brothers solo album, Seth Avett Sings Greg Brown, which is a tribute to the singer-songwriter from Iowa.

As previously noted, for Seth Avett Sings Greg Brown the guitarist “transcribed, interpreted and went deep inside 10 songs by the indie legend who’s been one of his guiding lights since he first heard him at age 15.” Avett co-produced the album with Dana Nielsen and recorded it primarily in various hotels around the country while touring with his band.

    The Avett Brothers’ Seth Avett will release an album of covers of songs by Greg Brown.

Avett first previewed the tribute album via the single, “Good Morning Coffee.” Regarding “Laughing River,” which appeared on Brown’s 1992 album, Dream Café, Avett stated:

“‘Laughing River’ is one among many standout songs written by Greg Brown, it just so happens that it’s the first one I fell in love with. I couldn’t imagine a more solid and sincere folk song.”

The collection of covers is set to arrive on November 4. That evening’s The Avett Brothers show at Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre will begin with Seth performing a Greg Brown-centric set.
