SCI Covers Michael Jackson & Jams With Colorado All-Stars

Early in the first set SCI welcomed soul/jazz vocalists Rhonda Thomas and Tony White for the three-song sequence of “Sweet Spot,” “Stay Through” and “Please Send Me Someone To Love.” The first two were recent The String Cheese Incident originals while the third was the debut of Percy Mayfield’s 1950 hit. Thomas and White had previously sung with the Colorado jam act on both October 31, 2013 and 2014 at Suwanee Hulaween in Live Oak, Florida. There have been reports Cheese jammed on “First Tube” by Phish during “Round The Wheel” but while the similarities are there it seems like wishful thinking.
Bill Nershi & Co. ended the opening stanza with “Live And Let Die” by Paul McCartney, a cover the band first played at last year’s Suwannee Hulaween. The second set began with the return of “Tinder Box” for the first time since nearly two years to the day prior at Red Rocks. Staples “Restless Wind” and “You’ve Got The World” followed leading into “Hotel Window” and fan favorite “Rivertrance.” SCI brought the set to a close by stringing together “Way Back Home” > “Looking Glass” > “Just One Story.”
The encore started with a drum jam featuring two of Colorado’s best drummers –Dave Watts of The Motet and Jeremy Salken of Big Gigantic. Then SCI welcomed back Thomas and White for a cover of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” within “Rosie.” The String Cheese Incident’s 2015 visit to Red Rocks concludes tonight with a webcast available via TourGigs.
