Saxophonist Sam Kininger Guests With Dave Matthews Band In Syracuse
By Scott Bernstein Jun 23, 2016 • 9:25 am PDT
Longtime Lettuce and Soulive collaborator Sam Kininger sat-in with the Dave Matthews Band on Wednesday night in Syracuse. The saxophonist made his ninth appearance with DMB and first since 2010 as the group made their debut at the Lakeview Amphitheatre in Syracuse.
After a string of shows featuring bust outs to kick off their 25th anniversary tour, Dave Matthews Band has settled into a more routine repertoire when it comes to song selections. There’s still treats to be had as Wednesday’s show featured the tour’s second versions of fan favorites “Lie In Our Graves” and “Shake Me Like A Monkey” as well as the run’s third “Typical Situation.”
Kininger emerged at the end of DMB’s main set to add to “What Would You Say” and a “Jimi Thing” featuring bits of Prince’s “Sexy MF.” Sam’s first Dave Matthews Band guest appearance took place way back in 2001 and he sat-in with them seven more times through 2010. Last night’s “Jimi Thing” was the fourth he’s played on and spanned nearly 15 minutes. Next up for DMB is a two-night stand in Camden that begins on Friday.
