Rooster Conspiracy Delivers 70-Minute ‘Terrapin Station’ At ‘Unlimited Devotion’

As reported, Ardmore Music Hall near Philadelphia hosted this year’s installment of Unlimited Devotion: A Celebration Of The Grateful Dead this past weekend. One of the many notable sets that took place was the return of Rooster Conspiracy featuring guitarist Eric Krasno, bassist Reed Mathis, drummer Jay Lane and keyboardist Todd Stoops. The quartet delivered a 70-minute version of “Terrapin Station” that included unplanned forays into portions of other songs on Saturday night at the second of two Unlimited Devotion benefit concerts.

Rooster Conspiracy was birthed by Mathis, Stoops, Krasno and Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann during a January 2017 jam session. The current lineup went on to make their debut at Schimanski in New York City on September 23, 2017 as part of Brooklyn Comes Alive, where they performed a 90-minute version of “Deal” with sections of “Cassidy” thrown in.

The quartet began their set with a portion of “Terrapin Station” and every once in a while would return to different sections of the Grateful Dead classic. Along the way Rooster Conspiracy jammed on or sang lyrics from a number of tunes including the Dead’s “The Other One” and “They Love Each Other,” Michael Jackson’s “Beat It,” Thigpen/Banks/Marion’s “That’s What Love Will Make You Do” and Jimi Hendrix’s “Machine Gun.” Mathis, Krasno, Stoops and Lane covered vast ground over the course of the 70-minute “Terrapin” as they varied tempos from slow-and-throbbing to fast-paced peaks with impressive results.
