For the second consecutive night of their Spring Tour Gov’t Mule supplemented their show with a guest appearance with saxophonist Ron Holloway joining much of last nights concert at Pocahontas State Park Heritage Amphitheater in Chesterfield. Virginia. While Thursday night’s tour opener saw multiple collaborators, Holloway was last night’s sole addition teaming with guitarist Warren Haynes, bassist Jorgen Carlsson, keyboardist Danny Louis and drummer Matt Abts.
The show began with “Steppin’ Lightly” > “Brand New Angel,” “Streamline Woman,” “Inside Outside Woman Blues” and “Lay Your Burden Down” before previous Mule stage sharer and current Warren Haynes Band member, Holloway emerged for a version of Rufus and Chaka Khan’s “Tell Me Something Good.” Holloway stuck around to add his horn to the set closing “Devil Likes It Slow.”
The second half of the show saw Hollway join Abts during the mid-set drums breakdown and stick around for the rest of the show. Out of “Drums” came Albert King’s “Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home” which included “Eleanor Rigby” and “Getaway” teases and “Will It Go Round In Circles” and “Let Me Have It All” lyrics. Robert Johnson’s “32/20 Blues” closed out the set before an encore that saw the typical Mule meshing of T. Rex’s “Bang A Gong (Get It On)” sandwiched in the middle of Tom Waits’ “Going Out West.”
Gov’t Mule’s tour continues tonight at the Peace Center for the Performing Arts in Greenville, South Carolina.
