Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame act The Rolling Stones continued their No Filter Tour of Europe on Tuesday night at St. Mary’s Stadium in Southampton, England. The band included the 2018 debut of Exile On Main St. classic “Sweet Virginia” within their set.
Vocalist Mick Jagger, guitarists Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood and drummer Charlie Watts along with bassist Darryl Jones, keyboardist Chuck Leavell, multi-instrumentalist Matt Clifford, saxophonist Karl Denson, multi-instrumentalist Tim Ries and vocalists Sasha Allen and Bernard Fowler have opened with a different song at each show of the run thus far. The Rolling Stones kept the trend intact by kicking off last night’s show with “Start Me Up.” Jagger & Co. then worked through the year’s second “Let’s Spend The Night Together” and a rare early version of “Tumbling Dice.”
Tuesday’s concert continued with “It’s Only Rock & Roll (But I Like It)” and blues number “Just Your Fool.” Next, the tour’s second “Under My Thumb” was followed by the return of “Sweet Virginia.” The Rolling Stones have only performed “Sweet Virginia” four times in the past decade. A pairing of “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” and “Paint It Black” led into the Keith Richards-fronted portion of the evening. Richards went with the recently revived “The Worst” and “Before They Make Me Run” in Southampton.
Mick Jagger returned after “Before They Make Me Run” to lead The Stones on hits “Sympathy For The Devil” and “Miss You” before the guitarists had a chance to shine on “Midnight Rambler.” Tuesday’s main set concluded with “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and “Brown Sugar.” Each Stones show in 2018 has ended with an encore of “Gimme Shelter” and “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” and the concert in Southampton was no exception.
The Rolling Stones return to the stage in Coventry on June 2.
