A few months back bassist Reed Mathis started sharing details about his new project, Electric Beethoven. Today, there’s finally news about the studio album that gave birth to the project, Beathoven.
Mathis enlisted an impressive array of musicians to contribute to his album in which he presents newly reimagined movements of Beethoven’s Symphonies 3 and 6 in their entireties. Phish’s Page McConnell and Mike Gordon, Marco Benevento, Joe Russo, the Barr Brothers, Robert Walter and Galactic’s Stanton Moore are just some of those who contributed to Beathoven, which is due on September 30 via Royal Potato Family.
Reed traveled to each musician’s respective towns over the past few years to capture the majority of the nine movements that comprise the two symphonies in the musicians’ natural environment. The bassist chose artists he felt “best embodied the spirit of Beethoven.”
Electric Beethoven is billed as the world’s first CDM (classical dance music) band due to the group’s combination of jamtronica with Beethoven. Mathis recently debuted a live EB lineup of Jay Lane (Primus, Ratdog) on drums, Todd Stoops (RAQ / Kung Fu) on keyboards, Cochrane McMillan (Tea Leaf Green) on percussion and laptop and Clay Welch on guitar. The group played a series of Bay Area gigs and are signed on for Catskill Chill and Jam Cruise.
