Couple of country gems.
Caitlin Canty: Reckless Skyline

Pretty much from the first note, I’ve had the lead track on Caitlin Canty’s new album, Reckless Skyline, stuck in my head. The song, “Get Up” sets the tone for the rest of this excellent album: haunting vocal, a hook that’s kinda sneaky-catchy and a terrific backing band with steel guitars leading the way. The rest of the record bounces between multiple country-centric styles, from the more rollickin’ beer bar feel to beautiful folk; heartbreak to breakin’ hearts. Canty pretty much nails it all, including a masterful take on Neil Young’s “Unknown Legend.” Much to love here.

Jake Xerxes Fussell: Jake Xerxes Fussell

When you listen to Jake Xerxes Fussell sing the songs on his self-titled release, the word that comes to mind is traditional, you can almost hear the crackle of the needle. You also know that you’re listening to something special in this Durham-based singer. The album is produced by and features RecommNed-alum William Tyler and his handiwork is clear comfort with the warm Nashville-strings sound: finger-picked guitar, pedal steel and more bring life to this folk and blues music. But the star-in-the-making is Fussell bringing a fresh feel to the tried-and-true folk tradition. Just perfect.
