Railroad Earth Welcomes Johnny Grubb & Greensky Bluegrass In Mount Pocono

This past Friday night jamgrass acts Railroad Earth and Greensky Bluegrass concluded a collaboration-filled three-night run. Friday’s show at the Sherman Summer Stage in Mount Pocono, Pennslyvania ended with an encore that not only featured both bands but also former RRE bassist Johnny Grubb.

Greensky kicked off the act the action with a set featuring such originals as “Burn Them,” “The Four” and “Blood Sucking F(r)iends.” The performance also included a nicely extended “Don’t Lie” and covers of Flatt & Scruggs’ “Bringing In The Georgia Mail” and “Chalkdust Torture” by Phish.

Railroad Earth, a band formed not far from where the show took place, opened with “Storms.” Up next was a take on Tim O’Brien & Darrell Scott’s “Walk Beside Me” and RRE originals “When The Sun Gets In Your Blood,” “Happy Song” and “Adding My Voice.” The group then played “Lovin’ You” in honor of Johnny & Michelle Grubb’s wedding anniversary. A sequence of “Farewell To Isinglass” > “Chasin’ A Rainbow” showed off the talents of special guest keyboardist Matt Slocum, who played the entire set. RRE finished off the set with a “Colorado” > “Face With A Hole” > “Seven Story Mountain” trifecta and “Everything Comes Together.”

The encore featured members of both bands. RRE’s Andrew Altman and GSBG’s Mike Devol swapped in and out with Grubb throughout a 30-minute medley. The medley began with the Greensky original “Leap Year” and evolved into Railroad Earth’s “Head.” With each song having similar “Whoa” refrains, the bands created a mashup/medley of the tunes.
