Radiohead Surprises Fans With ‘Hail To The Thief Live Recordings 2003 – 2009’ Album

Radiohead revisited their sixth studio album, 2003’s Hail To The Thief, by surprise releasing a new live album. Hail To The Thief Live Recordings 2003 – 2009 is out today digitally with a one-off vinyl pressing to follow on October 31.

The 12-track set features performances of Hail To The Thief cuts recorded during concerts held in London, Amsterdam, Buenos Aires and Dublin between 2003 and 2009. Radiohead also unveiled the official live video of “There, There” from the LP, captured on March 24, 2009 in Buenos Aires.

Mixed by Ben Baptie and mastered by Matt Colton, the new collection “allowed the band to re-evaluate their relationship with” Hail To The Thief, which came on the heels of 2001’s Amnesiac and was followed by In Rainbows in 2007. Frontman Thom Yorke recently co-created an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet using reworked songs from the 2003 LP as Hamlet Hail To The Thief.

Yorke shared the following about how his work on the adaptation led to the new live album, stating:

“In the process of thinking of how to build arrangements for the Shakespeare Hamlet/Hail To The Thief theatre production, I asked to hear some archive live recordings of the songs. I was shocked by the kind of energy behind the way we played. I barely recognised us, and it helped me find a way forward. We decided to get these live recordings mixed and released (it would have been insane to keep them for ourselves). It has all been a very cathartic process. We very much hope you enjoy them.”
