Sly & the Family Stone are the focus of a new documentary film, SLY LIVES! (aka The Burden of Black Genius), streaming now on Hulu and Disney+. Examining the influence and lasting legacy of Sly Stone and his legendary band, the feature film was directed by Academy Award-winning director Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson.

Sly Stone was born Sylvester Stewart in Denton, Texas in 1943. The funk pioneer founded and led the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame act Sly & The Family Stone. The group was made up of Stone’s siblings, Rose Stone and Freddie Stone, along with others including Greg Errico, Jerry Martini, Larry Graham and the late Cynthia Robinson.

The ahead-of-its-time group mixed elements of many different genres of music during its late ’60s and early ’70s peak. Their time-withstanding hits as “Stand!,” “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin),” “Everyday People,” “Hot Fun In The Summertime” and “Sing A Simple Song,” are among Sly & The Family Stone’s most memorable contributions.

Errico, Martini, Graham and Robinson (posthumously) are among those who appear in SLY LIVES!. The documentary features additional interviews with Sly Stone’s family members, Sylvette Phunne Robinson, Novena Carmel and Sylvester Stewart Jr.

The Roots drummer also interviewed musicians André 3000, D’Angelo, Chaka Khan, Q-Tip, Nile Rodgers, George Clinton and and producers/record executives Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis and Clive Davis.

SLY LIVES! follows Questlove’s prior foray into feature-length documentary filmmaking, 2021’s Summer Of Soul. The film chronicling the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature and the Grammy Award for Best Music Film.
