Renowned producer Sir George Martin died earlier this week at the age of 90. The legendarily influential studio man behind The Beatles storied catalog of hit records was revered around the music world for his keen sense of innovation and dynamic approach to record making. While he’s rightly best remembered for his work with The Fab Four, the “Fifth Beatle” also contributed to many well-known artists’ recordings outside of The Beatles, and those songs are the focus of the Spotify Playlist below.
Among the 15 songs making up the playlist are cuts from solo efforts released by The Beatles Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney. This week Starr appeared in a video along with several others discussing Martin’s legacy, and McCartney shared a note referring to him as “like a second father” and remarking, “[Martin] was the most generous, intelligent and musical person I’ve ever had the pleasure to know” (read his full statement here).
The playlist below also hosts other Martin-helmed tracks by Elton John, Jeff Beck, Billy Preston, Cheap Trick, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Ultravox and more, including Shirley Bassey’s “Goldfinger” theme from the James Bond film of the same name. Martin himself makes an appearance on some recordings, such as adding piano to America’s well-known hit “Tin Man.” Give the playlist a spin here:
