On April 23, 1987 Georgia rockers Widespread Panic debuted a cover of Jorma Kaukonen’s “Genesis” off the Hot Tuna/Jefferson Airplane guitarist’s 1974 solo debut studio album Quah. Today, Panic has unveiled professionally-shot video of the band’s most recent performance of “Genesis” from February 14, 2016 at the Township Auditorium in Columbia, South Carolina.
“Genesis” has been in Widespread Panic’s live repertoire ever since its debut in 1987 with a few notable gaps including 726 performances between January 7, 1991 and December 31, 1995. Though the group played “Genesis” four times in 2014, it was only covered once in 2015 ahead of the Valentine’s Day performance. Jorma Kaukonen sang “Genesis” with Widespread Panic on one occasion – July 4, 2000 at San Francisco’s famed Warfield Theater.
