Pro-Shot Video: Sufjan Stevens Performs ‘Carrie & Lowell’ Live

In 2015, Sufjan Stevens released the critically-acclaimed Carrie & Lowell and toured in support of the studio album. Professionally-shot video footage from Stevens’ late-2015 concert featuring a complete performance of Carrie & Lowell has been shared by the multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter.

Titled after Stevens’ estranged mother Carrie and stepfather Lowell Brams, the 11-track album was partly motivated by the 2012 death of his mother with whom he had recently reconciled. The emotionally heavy-themed songs made up the bulk of the November 9, 2015 concert held at North Charleston Performing Arts Center in North Charleston, South Carolina.

“Redford (For Yia-Yia & Pappou)” off Sufjan’s Michigan album opened the performance, followed by the 11-songs (in a different ordering than the LP) that make up Carrie & Lowell. “Futile Devices” and “Vesuvius” off The Age Of Adz were fit into the main set ahead of the Carrie & Lowell closer Blue Bucket Of Gold. The encore mixed Illinois selections “Concerning the UFO Sighting Near Highland, Illinois,” “John Wayne Gacy Jr.” and “Chicago” with Michigan track “For the Widows in Paradise, For the Fatherless in Ypsilanti” and the Seven Swans cuts “Abraham” and “To Be Alone With You.” The final song performed was a cover of Drake’s “Hotline Bling” featuring guest vocalist Gallant.
