Pro-Shot Video: Joe Russo’s Almost Dead Kicks Off First Of 2 At The Capitol Theatre

Last night while Phish was kicking off their 13 show residency at Madison Square Garden, about 25 miles north of Manhattan Joe Russo’s Almost Dead was settling in for the first of two nights at the historic The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. The five-piece band was back to its original lineup after Jeff Chimenti and Jon Shaw pinch-hit last weekend at the Green River Festival, and as per usual the band mined all eras of the Grateful Dead’s repertoire for last night’s two set show.

With keyboardist Marco Benevento, who used a grand piano throughout the evening and bassist Dave Dreiwitz back in the fold JRAD opened the night with the Bill Browning folk tune “Dark Hollow,” which the Dead debuted in February of 1970 during their brief flirtation with playing acoustic sets. Senator Al Franken’s favorite tune “Althea” began a segued filled stretched that saw the Grateful Dead tribute act transition into “Playing In The Band” and “They Love Each Other.” Next up, guitarist Scott Metzger led the band through take on “Gonesville,” from Bob Weir’s excellent 2016 release Blue Mountain. The Workingman’s Dead track “Casey Jones” and Jerry Garcia Band staple “Sugaree” closed out the first set.

The night’s second set kicked off with “Deep Ellum Blues,” another folkie number that stretches back to Jerry Garcia’s early bluegrass days. “Easy Wind” followed with “The Wheel,” kicking off a seamless segued-filled stretch that included late-period Dead chestnut “So Many Roads” that unusually flowed into their psychedelic-exploration vehicle “Dark Star.” The transitions kept coming to close the second stanza with “Estimated Prophet” eventually morphing into “Touch of Grey.” Joe Russo’s Almost Dead returned to the stage to conclude the night with a take on Bob Dylan’s “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue.”

JRAD will take the stage at The Capitol Theatre again tonight, which can be streamed via nugs.tv.
