While Dead & Company primarily stuck to songs from the Grateful Dead’s live repertoire over the course of their Fall Tour 2015 and Summer Tour 2016, there was new music composed at each show. Dead & Company presented the completely improvised “Drums” and “Space” during most second sets. Today, the band has shared professionally-shot video featuring one of the wilder “Drums” sequences from last summer.
The video below was filmed during Dead & Company’s July 3, 2016 show at Folsom Field in Boulder, Colorado. “Drums” started with the Rhythm Devils of Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann building a healthy groove and throwing samples into the mix. The pair continued by working over many of the percussion instruments within their massive rig. As the jamtronica-infused segment progressed, eventually Dead & Company bassist Oteil Burbridge emerged from the wings to honk horns. Keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and guitarist John Mayer also got in on the “Drums” action before the clip concludes.
