On September 21 Bob Weir received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Americana Music Awards at a ceremony held at The Ryman in Nashville. Weir took the opportunity to honor Merle Haggard, who passed away this past April, with a cover of “Mama Tried.” Pro-shot video of the performance has been shared by NPR.
Weir was joined by a backing band that included guitarist Buddy Miller for a song that was a staple of the Grateful Dead’s live repertoire. Bobby’s “Mama Tried” will air as part of this weekend’s Austin City Limits episode which features the best performances from the 2016 Americana Music Awards ceremony.
