Prince Mixtape Spotify Playlist

Notorious Spotify hold-out Prince was diligent at keeping whichever recordings of his he could off of streaming services (and other internet platforms as well). While Tidal subscribers have access to the Purple One’s full catalog, Spotify users wanting to listen to Prince have to dig a little deeper. Thanks to a number of compilations, tributes and film soundtracks as well as cuts from a band featuring a teenage Prince Rogers Nelson, Spotify streamers can also listen to several Prince-featured songs which are compiled in the playlist below.

Prince officially issued a lone single on Spotify, “Stare,” which he released to the service last year and starts off the playlist. A 16-year-old Prince appears alongside his cousin’s husband Pepe Willie in number of recordings by Minneapolis funk outfit 94 East. The Purple One is also featured on tracks he wrote and recorded with longtime collaborator Shelia E. and with R&B vocalist Janelle Monáe.

There are also covers of songs by Jimi Hendrix and Joni Mitchell off of tribute LPs Prince contributed to, as well as songs from such feature film soundtracks as Bright Lights, Big City and Happy Feet, the latter for which he wrote and recorded the Golden Globe winning “The Song Of The Heart.” The famed “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” from the all-star Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony concert in 2004 closes out the 15-track set that can be streamed below.
