The Po’ Ramblin’ Boys will release a new album entitled Never Slow Down on March 25 through the esteemed Smithsonian Folkways. JamBase is pleased to exclusively premiere the record’s latest single, “Ramblin’ Woman.”

The 11-track Never Slow Down serves as the follow-up to the bluegrass outfit’s Grammy-nominated album, 2017’s Toil, Tears & Trouble. Produced by the band and Dave Maggard, the new album was recorded at Sound Biscuit Productions in Sevierville, Tennessee. The LP mixes originals with the group’s interpretations of songs by The Stanley Brothers, Hazel Dickens & Alice Gerrard, George Jones and others. The forthcoming release marks the group’s first with fiddler Laura Orshaw as an official member of the band.

“Laura has been filling in for us since 2017, and she’s been part of the band for the last two years now,” lead singer and mandolinist C.J. Lewandowski said. “So, it’s five of us now. She gels perfectly with what we want to do in the studio and onstage — when the creative juices get flowing, the music gets hot. Having the fiddle in there really completes that signature lineup of what bluegrass music is. And with Laura, we’re able to open up all kinds of harmony structures, which gives each of us more opportunities to expand our palette of what we want to ultimately create and perform live.”

The band, which also includes guitarist Josh Rinkel, banjoist Jereme Brown and bassist Jasper Lorentzen, previously shared the single “The Blues Are Close at Hand.” Regarding the new single “Ramblin’ Woman,” Orshaw relayed the below statement, telling JamBase:

“This song was written by Hazel Dickens in the 1970s as a rebuttal against all of the songs about ‘rambling men,’ so I thought it’d be the perfect debut single for me as a lead vocalist with The Po’ Ramblin’ Boys. Hazel Dickens was one of the first women to take center stage in bluegrass music. It was incredibly meaningful for me to hear Hazel’s music, and see other women performing on stage. While our band name harkens back to the old days of bluegrass when it was mostly men in touring bluegrass bands, we try to honor history while also expanding the reach of bluegrass music and keeping it relevant to our world today!”
