Pigeons Playing Ping Pong Conclude Movie Themed ‘Flockbuster’ Run In Baltimore

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong brought a two-show run of “Flockbuster” livestream concerts originating at The 8×10 in Baltimore to a close on Sunday night. Once again, as they did on Saturday, the quartet mixed songs from classic movies with originals to benefit The 8×10’s COVID-19 Relief Fund and National Independent Venue Association.
After opening with “Pop Off,” PPPP kept the originals coming with “Something For Ya,” “In The Bubble” and “Poseidon.” Sunday’s “Poseidon” included two songs featured in films within. Up first was a debut cover of the Pixies’ “Where Is My Mind?,” a tune that provided the soundtrack for the final scene of 1999’s Fight Club. Pigeons also fit “Daddy Wasn’t There” from 2002’s Austin Powers In Goldmember into “Poseidon.” Another medley followed as “Offshoot” gave way to the band’s second ever cover of Will Smith’s “Men In Black” from the 1997 movie of the same name. “Men In Black” led into the end of “Offshoot” before “High As Five” closed out the penultimate set of the run.
Pigeons Playing Ping Pong kicked off the evening’s second set with a “Funk E Zekiel” that contained the band’s premiere rendition of Issac Hayes’ “Theme From Shaft.” Next, the band worked their first ever cover of John Williams’ “Theme From Jurassic Park” into “Zydeko.” From there, PPPP included cover debuts of John Carpenter’s “Halloween Theme” and Dick Dale’s version of “Miserlou” within their own “Sunny Day.” Quentin Tarantino used Dale’s “Miserlou” in the soundtrack for his 1994 film, Pulp Fiction.
One of the band’s newest originals, “Undivided,” followed the “Sunny Day” medley. “Undivided” bled into “Schwanthem,” which in turn led into a cover of “What Is Love” by Haddaway. “What Is Love” was featured in 1998’s A Night At The Roxbury. Pigeons returned to “Schwanthem” to end the set. For the encore, the quartet treated fans to beloved original “King Kong.”
