Pigeons Playing Ping Pong concluded a brief spring run through the Southeast on Tuesday, April 20 with a concert at Avondale Brewing Company in Birmingham, Alabama. The Baltimore-based quartet delivered some 4/20 friendly covers for the occasion.
PPPP got the first set underway with “Landing” from their 2010 Funk EP which they jammed into “Too Long.” Next, “Somethin’ For Ya” began a seamless section that also featured “Undivided,” “Move Like That” and “Weightless” ahead of the staple “Julia” which segued into “Nothing But Flowers.” The Talking Heads cover saw the band getting into some 4/20 shenanigans, changing the lyric to “Nothing But Flower.” “Paperboy” then came ahead of first set closer, “Porcupine.”
The second frame got underway with more vintage Pigeons in “Whoopie” ahead of the relatively newer song “Fun In Funk” off the band’s 2017 LP, Pizazz. The quartet then played their recently unveiled tune, “Twitch,” debuted at their Super Bowl PPPPre-Party Halftime Hall Of Fame concert at the Brooklyn Bowl in February. The 4/20 apropos “High As Five” followed ahead of “Snake Eyes.”
Next, the staple “Melting Lights” commenced a continuous section which also included “J-Town” and “Cliffs,” the latter encompassing The Lion King’s “Hakuna Matata,” an apt, easy-going cover for 4/20 festivities. PPPP then finished up “Cliffs” as well as “J-Town” to close the second set. Pigeons would kick off the encore with the classic “Zydeco” which headed into a reggae instrumental version of the beloved Peter, Paul & Mary number “Puff The Magic Dragon” ahead of a return to “Zydeco” and the evening’s conclusion.
