Phish The Mann Philadelphia Setlist & The Skinny | Night Two
Phish continues to toy with song placement even more so than usual this tour. For instance “Glide” opened tonight’s show, which was the first time the Picture Of Nectar gem has been played in that spot since July 15, 1992. “Sing Monica” served as the evening’s initial dose of Fuego material. Quick romps through “Birds Of A Feather” and “Wolfman’s Brother” gave way to the tour debut of Mike Gordon’s “Sugar Shack.” The tour debuts continued with the galloping “Alaska,” while keyboardist Page McConnell shined on “McGrupp And The Watchful Hosemasters” that followed. The Gamehendge song had been on the shelf since July 26, 2013 -a span of 34 shows. In a bit of a roller coaster segment tempo-wise, the crowd went up with the high-energy “Stealing Time From The Faulty Plan” and was led down by the mellow sounds of “Horn.” Pop-rocker “Devotion To A Dream” brought the coaster back up only to be followed by ballad “Silent In The Morning.” To complete the ride, the audience was then sent through a few loops and corkscrews during a frenetic, above-average “Run Like An Antelope” set closer. A female concertgoer jumped on stage as Trey sang the final lyrics of “Antelope,” only to be quickly escorted away by security.
Thanks to Phish’s extreme focus on originals this summer, we’ve seen a number of songs used as jam vehicles that aren’t often used for that purpose. This evening, the second set-opening “Chalk Dust Torture” spanned 17 minutes. The Type II “Chalk Dust” saw the band explore three distinct spaces, the last of which featured blissful licks from Anastasio, cosmic synth swirls from McConnell, a steady and powerful beat courtesy of drummer Jon Fishman and the bass bombs of Mike Gordon. Eventually the jam faded into the tour’s third “Wingsuit,” which was followed by another well-played song off the band’s most recent album in “Winterqueen.” Anastasio starred in a guitar-driven “Twist” that had even more Santana swagger than usual.
When Phish lit into a cover of Talking Heads’ “Crosseyed And Painless” the crowd exploded. The band’s focus on originals has made covers like “Crosseyed” and last night’s “2001” welcomed as conquering heroes by receptive audiences who weren’t sure if and when they’d see these songs this summer. As for the “Crosseyed” itself, the hard-rocking cover broke form ever so slightly before melting into a spot-on rendition of “Waste.” “Mike’s Song” was notable for Page’s funk-fortified clavinet work and “Wingsuit” teases from Trey. “Sneakin’ Sally Through The Alley” then followed “Mike’s Song” for the first time ever and climaxed into a silly vocal jam. In a stark contrast, the encore featured “Julius,” which has filled the encore role at three out of seven shows this year, and “Weekapaug Groove,” which closed a Phish show for just the fourth time ever in the 25+ years since it was debuted. Both found the band loose and toying with each section of the songs. The tour continues on Friday night in New York City for the first of three shows at Randall’s Island.
