One of the many traditions missed with the lack of Phish festivals over the past nine years were new installments of “From The Archives” featuring archivist Kevin Shapiro digging deep into the band’s vault to broadcast choice cuts on The Bunny. This past weekend’s Mondegreen festival in Dover, Delaware gave fans nine Phish sets to enjoy and four fresh “From The Archives” episodes.
“From The Archives” returned at Mondegreen after a six-year layoff as the show was aired in 2018 even though Phish’s Curveball festival was canceled. Additionally, installments devoted to single concerts have aired on SiriusXM’s Phish Radio to preview live archival releases. Kevin Shapiro curated tracks over the Mondegreen editions spanning 1985 through 2023 with an obvious focus on the 1.0 era before Phish started sharing official soundboard releases of each show.

Fittingly, Shapiro kicked off the first Mondegreen episode with Phish’s lone electric cover of Boston hit “Foreplay > Longtime” from July 12, 1999. The Wednesday evening installment also featured the March 25, 1993 “Colonel Forbin’s Ascent > Fly Famous Mockingbird -> Kung -> Icculus > Fly Famous Mockingbird” laid down in Santa Cruz, California, the 30-minute “NüremberGhost > Cars Trucks Buses” from Germany on July 3, 1997, an incredibly weird piece recorded by Phish at the “Little Red House” in Burlington, Vermont on December 13, 1985 and stellar “You Enjoy Myself -> Sleeping Monkey” played on October 24, 1995 in Madison, Wisconsin.
Thursday’s episode began with “Wilson > Run Like An Antelope” from May 23, 1994 in Olympia, Washington. Shapiro then unearthed extended versions of “Ya Mar” and “Limb By Limb” recorded on July 25, 1998 (Austin) and December 3, 1999 (Cincinnati) respectively, along with a soundcheck jam captured on July 3, 2013 in Bangor, Maine. Santana percussionist Karl Perazzo was featured on the “Mike’s Song > The Horse > Silent in the Morning > Weekapaug Groove” finale that was played on October 29, 1996 in Tallahassee, Florida.
On Friday, Kevin Shapiro kicked off the show by airing ambient takes on “Birds Of A Feather” and “Cities” dating back to July 8, 1999 (Virginia Beach) and September 24, 2000 (Minneapolis) respectively. Summer ’97 was then represented with a wild “Gumbo” from Desert Sky Pavilion before the archivist revisited Phish’s November 9, 1998 show at UIC Pavilion in Chicago for “Bathtub Gin > The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday > Avenu Malkenu > The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday.” The third Mondegreen episode ended back at Santa Cruz ’93 with the “Have Mercy” soundcheck featuring “Harry Hood” lyrics.
Saturday saw Shapsio pull “Suzy Greenberg > Llama” from Phish’s set opening for Santana at SPAC on July 27, 1992 to get the final episode underway. Next came a “Reba” laid down on October 18, 1994 in Nashville and the June 30, 1999 “Free” played in Bonner Springs, Kansas. From there, Kevin went with the mind-blowing “Tweezer > 2001” recorded in Copenhagen, Denmark on July 1, 1998. The archivist returned to Fall Tour 1995 to say farewell with the December 5, 1995 (Amherst) “Harry Hood” and a banjo-laced “Slave To Traffic Light” performed in Nashville on November 29, 1995 featuring special guest Béla Fleck.
Several times in the past pre-FM “From The Archives” recordings have circulated in lossless form. For now, fans can enjoy captures of the streams. Downloads are currently available here thanks to the efforts of Phantasy Tour users choco, phishb13 and parallx. Check out the setlists and streams of most tracks below:
