Phish posted pro-shot videos featuring well-jammed versions of “The Moma Dance” and “Fluffhead” from their recent three-night stand at Alpine Valley with the latter also including the “Saw It Again” that followed. “The Moma Dance” came on Friday, August 12 at the famed East Troy, Wisconsin venue, while “Fluffhead” and “Saw It Again” were played on Saturday, August 13.

The Alpine Valley run brought the main leg of the band’s summer excursion to a close as the band now has a few weeks off before they end the tour with four nights at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park near Denver over Labor Day Weekend. One trend played out this summer has been the emergence of adventurous improvisation out of songs that aren’t known as jam vehicles. Both “The Moma Dance” and “Fluffhead” from Alpine are prime examples.

“Moma Dance” was the penultimate song of Phish’s first set at Alpine Valley this past Friday. The quartet had previously broken through the tune’s typical structure just a handful of times previously. On Friday, fans were treated to a highly-exploratory version spanning over 18 minutes led by guitarist Trey Anastasio. JamBase’s David Onigman detailed the Alpine “Moma Dance” in his recap of the concert as such:

As the band, once again, not totally together began “The Moma Dance,” Trey was in a playful mood, lightly singing the vocal intro typically reserved for versions from the Trey Anastasio Band and leading the quartet in some brief start-stop action.

Using some quick loops and a little reverse delay, Trey made sure this was not going to be a standard eight-minute reading of “The Moma Dance.” This rare ‘jammed out’ “Moma” at times sounded akin to what you typically expect from “You Enjoy Myself”, playing with a similar tempo and in the “YEM” jam’s key as well. After bringing the jam to a strong peak, the band returned to finish “Moma” in typical fashion.

Phish kicked off the middle night of their 2022 visit to Alpine Valley with a rare cover of Prince’s “1999.” The surprises continued with the second longest take on “Fluffhead” in the song’s 38-year history. Where did the lengthiest version of “Fluffhead” take place? At Alpine Valley back on July 24, 1999. Hence, it’s likely both the “1999” opener and “Saw It Again” that followed the 22-minute “Fluff” were calling back to that fateful night in East Troy 23 years prior.

“The Arrival” segment of the complex composition birthed the ambitious improvisation in Wisconsin on Saturday. The quartet covered plenty of ground in the 10-minute excursion. Read what JamBase contributor Jeffrey Greenblatt wrote about “Fluffhead” and the ensuing “Saw It Again” in his recap of the show:

The old-school workhorse was delivered with aplomb as the band impeccably worked their way through each section. As the tune wound down, Anastasio trigged a delay loop with a noticeably large grin on his face with the rest of the band following into a spacey jam. The guitarist took charge, with [keyboardist Page] McConnell utilizing all the keyboards at his disposal as things turned dark and gooey as it segued into “Saw It Again.”
