Check out the setlist and The Skinny for Phish’s 2022 summer tour kickoff at Xfinity Center in Mansfield, Massachusetts.

Phish’s return to the Flynn on May 18, 1992 ended a 53-show spring tour. The band’s previous performance at the hometown venue took place four shows into the run on March 12, 1992. The foursome had gone coast-to-coast over the two months in between including a memorable West Coast swing in April and celebrated keyboardist Page McConnell the night prior at Union College in Schenectady, New York.

Road manager Andrew Fischbeck introduced the band at the Flynn and asked fans not to stand on chairs or smoke. “Be respectful of this beautiful theater that we’d love to play many times in the future,” added Fischbeck. After a month off, Phish would follow the Flynn show by heading to Europe for the first time, participating in the inaugural H.O.R.D.E. tour and opening for Santana at amphitheaters nationwide. Guitarist Trey Anastasio hinted at what was to come by working teases of the Santana-popularized “Oye Como Va” into the “Suzy Greenberg” that began Phish’s Flynn play on May 18, 1992.

The tour started a few weeks after the release of Phish’s major label debut, A Picture Of Nectar. Five songs from the LP made the setlist in Burlington: “Guelah Papyrus,” “Poor Heart,” “Glide,” “Llama” and “Cavern.” Anastasio made the most of the pause within “Guelah Papyrus” with Fall Down and The Simpsons secret language signals. Additionally, Trey and bassist Mike Gordon pulled off full choreography to “The Asse Festival” portion of “Guelah Papyrus.”

The first set at the Flynn came to a close with a jam chart-worthy “Run Like An Antelope.” Anastasio strung together one jaw-dropping riff after another propelled by drummer Jon Fishman‘s creative and dexterous playing. The band hit upon multiple peaks including one akin to “Tweezer Reprise” to end the “Antelope” and first set.

Phish treated fans to a double dose of Nectar by starting the second set at the Flynn with “Glide” and “Llama.” The latter was short but incredibly sweet. Page and Trey took full advantage of their solos and showed off how quickly they could play back then. Next up were a pair of beloved song suites as “Mike’s Song” > “I Am Hydrogen” > “Weekapaug Groove” followed “The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday” > “Avenu Malkenu” > “The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday.” Both “Mike’s” and “Weekapaug” join “Antelope” and “Llama” as highlights of the concert thanks to inventive stop/start jamming in each.

Jon Fishman had a turn in the spotlight late in the set, when he led the band through Syd Barrett’s “Love You.” A fierce “Runaway Jim” ended the second set before Phish said farewell to the hometown crowd with Felice and Boudeleaux Bryant’s “Rocky Top.” Watch the new transfer of Phish’s May 18, 1992 concert below:

Thanks to Cleantones for taking the time to lovingly prep the new transfer. Rande Kunish provided the video, a second generation VHS tape, as the master was “previously eaten in a VCR.” Buy Cleantone coffee to show your appreciation.
