On Saturday, Phil Lesh and The Terrapin Family Band headed to Los Angeles for a two-night stand at the Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever. The 78-year-old bassist was joined by guitarists Grahame Lesh, Ross James and Alex Koford plus vocalist Elliott Peck, multi-instrumentalist Jason Crosby and drummer Nathan Graham for the two-set show.

The seven-piece band opened up their night in Southern Califonia with a Grahame Lesh sung take on “Bertha.” Koford stepped up next leading the ensemble through “China Cat Sunflower.” Instead of its traditional partner, the septet paired it with the bluesy “Mr. Charlie” with Peck handling vocals. “Dire Wolf” followed, with James getting his first chance to front the band on “Alligator.” The tune that dates back the Grateful Dead’s psychedelic-era kicked off a jam-filled stretch as they offered up “Bird Song” and “Lay Down Sailor,” a tune that written by Brian Lesh and debuted last year. “The Music Never Stopped” brought the opening frame to a close.

Phil took charge to open up of the second set as he led The Terrapin Family Band through “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo.” Americana rocker “Ramble On Rose” came ahead of a seamless stretch that saw the collective work their way through “Help On The Way” and “Slipknot!” before segueing into Smokey Robinson & The Miracles’ Motown classic “I Second That Emotion.” The back half of the set was highlighted by the pairing of “St. Stephen” and “Morning Dew” with “Uncle John’s Band” closing out the stanza. Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves Of London” was tapped as the night’s lone encore.
