Phil Lesh & Friends Wrap Birthday Run At The Capitol Theatre
By Andy Kahn Mar 18, 2017 • 7:53 am PDT

Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh hosted a third straight night of Phil Lesh & Friends at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York on Friday. The St. Patrick’s Day show marked the end to Phil’s 77th birthday celebratory run as he guided the ensemble through two final sets of Dead staples and more at The Cap.
Lesh and vocalist Joan Osborne, guitarists Stanley Jordan and John Kadlecik, keyboardist Jason Crosby and drummer Mark Levy took the stage and launched into rendition of “Cold Rain And Snow” sung by the veteran bassist. Osborne took the ensemble through “Alabama Getaway” and “Next Time You See Me” before Phil joined in on “Viola Lee Blues.” Kadlecik brought the group out of jam to lead “Candyman” and the collective brought the first set to a close with “He’s Gone” and “Casey Jones.”
Set two opened with a cover of Traffic’s “Dear Mr. Fantasy” that opened into an improvisational sequence that landed on “St. Stephen.” Lesh’s “Unbroken Chain” came next followed by a cover of Bob Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower.” Osborne sang a subdued “Morning Dew” ahead of Jordan taking charge of a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing.” The set progressed with “The Wheel” and a closing rendition of Wilson Pickett’s “In The Midnight Hour.” The run a The Cap was capped with a “U.S. Blues” encore as Phil and the group brought the show to a end.
