As reported, Grateful dead bassist Phil Lesh began a nine-show Phil Lesh & Friends residency at The Capitol Theatre this past weekend. The three-night stand ended on Sunday with an encore featuring a cover of The Band’s iconic song “The Weight” in which members of the ensemble traded verses.

Harpist Mikaela Davis, guitarists John Scofield, Grahame Lesh and Eric Krasno, saxophonist/flautist Karl Denson, keyboardist Ivan Neville and drummer Alex Koford served as Phil’s band for the first three nights with one exception. Ivan Neville was replaced by Steve Molitz on keys for Saturday’s concert.

The Band initially issued “The Weight” on their 1968 debut album Music From Big Pink. On March 28, 1990 the Grateful Dead debuted their take on the song with members of the group alternating lead vocals throughout. Phil brought the trend of swapping verses to his various post-Jerry ensembles.

On Sunday, Alex Koford handled the first verse, Mikaela Davis sang the second verse, Grahame Lesh helmed the third verse, Ivan Neville took on the fourth verse and all of the group’s singers shared vocal duties on the final stanza.
