Phil Lesh & Friends Continue Birthday Run At Capitol Theatre

Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh played his second of three Phil Lesh & Friends shows at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York on Thursday night as part of a celebration of his 77th birthday. Phil led a band that included guitarists Stanley Jordan and John Kadlecik, drummer Mark Levy, vocalist Joan Osborne and keyboardist Jason Crosby through two sets focused on songs from the Grateful Dead’s live repertoire.
The band opened with “The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion),” an early Dead song from the band’s self-titled studio debut – which came out 50 years ago today. Osborne then belted “Samson & Delilah” and “Althea” before Phil handled lead vocal duties on “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo.” The set rolled on with a “Good Lovin” sung by Joan and John before Kadlecik fronted the group on “Dire Wolf.” Thursday’s opening stanza came to a close with “Cosmic Charlie.”
Last night’s second set began with “Scarlet Begonias” featuring lead vocals from Joan Osborne. The band then treated the audience to “Uncle John’s Band” ahead of Jordan leading them through an instrumental “Somewhere Over The Rainbow.” From there, Phil Lesh & Friends trotted out “Fire On The Mountain” and “Death Don’t Have No Mercy.” Osborne stepped into the spotlight for a take on The Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter” before the set concluded with the “Help On The Way” > “Slipknot!” > “Franklin’s Tower” trifecta. The band said farewell with a “Going Down The Road Feelin’ Bad” encore. Lesh and his mates return to The Cap tonight to end the run. A webcast is available via nugs.tv.
