Last night, Phil Lesh & Friends continued a four-night run in celebration of the Grateful Dead bassist’s 75th birthday at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. Lesh was joined by guitarists Warren Haynes and Eric Krasno as well as keyboardist Rob Barraco and drummer John Molo.

This version of the “Phil Lesh Quintet” that finds Krasno subbing for longtime “Q” guitarist Jimmy Herring, rolled through a number of Grateful Dead gems on Monday night with a few additional classic rock covers thrown in for good measure. Lesh and his ensemble started each set with a jam. The first set included Barraco taking the lead on “Dupree’s Diamond Blues,” “Doin’ The Rag,” “Alabama Getaway” and “Here Comes Sunshine,” while Haynes fronted the group on a rendition of The Allman Brothers Band’s “Blue Sky” and the Dead’s “West LA Fadeaway.”

The jam to start the second set led into a cover of Traffic’s “Dear Mr. Fantasy” sung by Warren. From there, the ensemble worked their way into Bob Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower” before “Viola Lee Blues” emerged out of the “Watchtower” improvisation. Haynes handled vocals on Van Morrison’s “Into The Mystic,” which was followed by a “Help On The Way”/”Slipknot!”/”Franklin’s Tower” sequence featuring renditions of “Just A Little Light” and “Uncle John’s Band” mixed in. The evening came to a close with a “Stella Blue” encore. Phil Lesh & Friends return to The Cap on Wednesday night. A webcast is available via Nugs.tv.
