Three generations of guitar heroes shared the stage at last night’s Love Rocks NYC benefit concert at The Beacon Theatre. Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Peter Frampton capped his three-song appearance by bringing out Phish axeslinger Trey Anastasio and rising star Grace Bowers for the Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” during the marathon, star-studded show.

Peter Frampton began his mini-set with an instrumental version of “Georgia On My Mind.” The 74-year-old musician performed while seated as he suffers from IBM, a muscle-wasting disease. Frampton was the only guitarist on stage for “Georgia On My Mind,” marking the only time in the four-hour concert the house band’s Eric Krasno and Larry Campbell left the stage. The iconic performer was joined for all three of his songs by his keyboardist, Rob Arthur.

For his second song, Peter Frampton treated the capacity crowd to a stellar rendition of “Do You Feel Like We Do.” The complete core house band led by bassist Will Lee was in place on Frampton’s 1976 hit as Kraz and Campbell returned to accompany Frampton, Arthur, keyboardists Jeff Babko and Michael Bearden, percussionist Pedrito Martínez and drummer Shawn Pelton. Peter uncorked a wild solo that included use of talk box within “Do You Feel Like We Do.”

Peter Frampton introduced Bowers as “a lady that is going to be on your mind for the rest of the weekend because she is an incredible player — one of the up and coming phenomenal players — I’ve known her for a while now.” Frampton then welcomed Anastasio as “somebody else that I’ve always wanted to play with” before he noted Anastasio and Phish has an album called Hampton Comes Alive. The name of the live LP is a play on the title of Peter’s legendary Frampton Comes Alive record. The guest guitarists each took seats next to Frampton.

The Phish guitarist is familiar with “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” dating back to Phish's Halloween 1994 performance of The White Album. Phish has since played the George Harrison-penned song 36 additional times through the latest on August 4, 2023.

Peter Frampton handled lead vocals on The White Album cut at Love Rocks NYC and took the first solo. The 18-year-old Bowers then tore the roof off the Beacon. Trey pumped his fist in Grace’s direction after she finished and unleashed a mammoth run of his own before all three guitarists exchanged licks.
