Pearl Jam Welcomes Sting & Cheap Trick Members At Madison Square Garden

Seattle rockers Pearl Jam concluded a two-night stand at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Monday night with a 31-song performance that saw the band joined by members of two Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame acts. Early in the show, Pearl Jam welcomed Rick Nielsen and Tom Petersson of Cheap Trick for one of the group’s most beloved songs while later in the evening Sting helped sing a Police classic.

Vedder introduced Nielsen and Petersson six songs into the show to play guitar and bass respectively on “Surrender” and congratulated them on Cheap Trick’s recent induction into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Pearl Jam had debuted their cover of the Cheap Trick hit earlier in the tour. Last night’s main set featured a total of 17 songs including the tour debut of “Leatherman” which hadn’t been performed since October 22, 2014.

Eddie covered the Beatles’ “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away” by his lonesome to kick off the first encore. Other songs performed in the first encore included “Present Tense,” “Breath,” “State Of Love & Trust” and “Porch.” For the second encore, Pearl Jam used all of the stage for “Last Kiss” with a focus on performing before the fans behind the stage. Vedder introduced “Driven To Tears” by The Police as one of the best songs that describes the feeling of being overwhelmed. He started to sing the tune when Sting emerged to lead the band through the rest of “Driven To Tears.” Pearl Jam then said farewell with a sequence of “Lightning Bolt,” “Sonic Reducer,” “Alive,” Baba O’Riley” and a “Yellow Ledbetter” that once again saw guitarist Mike McCready perform an instrumental “Star Spangled Banner.” The tour continues later this week in Quebec City.
