Pearl Jam brought their current North American tour to Ottawa’s Canadian Tire Centre on Saturday. The band dusted off a cover of Neil Young’s “Fuckin’ Up” for the first time in over four years as the penultimate song of the night.

Neil Young and Crazy Horse originally released “Fuckin’ Up” on their 1990 album, Ragged Glory. Pearl Jam debuted their cover of the song in 1993 and played “Fuckin’ Up” seven additional times that year. Young and Crazy Horse were joined by Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament for the song at the 1995 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony/Concert.

“Fuckin’ Up” was last played by Pearl Jam on July 3, 2018 leading into Saturday’s concert. The Seattle-based rock band followed a 17-song main set with a six-tune encore. “Fuckin’ Up” was revived as the house lights shined late in the encore before Pearl Jam said farewell with “Yellow Ledbetter.”

Pearl Jam is in the midst of the second 2022 North American leg of their Gigaton tour. The run began on Thursday in Quebec City. Vedder and his mates started last night’s show with “Of The Girl” off 2000’s Binaural. “Garden” came next and was one of six cuts from Pearl Jam’s debut 1991 studio album, Ten to make the setlist in Ottawa. The ensuing “Alright” along with versions of “Dance Of The Clairvoyants” and “Seven O’Clock” that came later represented Gigaton.

“Fuckin’ Up” was the second Neil Young cover played by Pearl Jam in Ottawa. Eddie Vedder discussed the band’s relationship with the Canadian artist before performing Young’s “Throw Your Hatred Down” towards the middle of the main set. Vedder and his mates then tagged a bit of The Rolling Stones’ “Waiting On A Friend” onto their own “Wishlist.” Last night’s main set concluded with a run featuring Ten classics “Black,” “Jeremy” and “Porch.”

Eddie Vedder took a moment at the beginning of Saturday’s encore to talk about the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert in London that happened earlier in the day. The Pearl Jam frontman noted how wonderful it was to see Taylor’s son, Shane Hawkins, play drums at the concert. He also mentioned late The Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie.

Pearl Jam kicked off the encore with “Better Man” and then played “Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town” for those behind the stage. A rendition of Victoria Williams’ “Crazy Mary” led into “Alive” before the band capped the concert with “Fuckin’ Up” and “Yellow Ledbetter.” The tour picks up in Hamilton, Ontario on Tuesday.
