phoffman, aka Greensky Bluegrass' Paul Hoffman, kicked off a five-show solo tour featuring support from Andy Dunnigan last night at the Ardmore Music Hall near Philadelphia. Hoffman and Dunnigan joined forces for the final six songs of the evening, including Dawes and Bob Seger covers.

Andy Dunnigan has been laying low since The Lil Smokies began an indefinite hiatus last April. Dunnigan opened the concert with a 30-minute set. The Montana-based musician was on acoustic guitar instead of his usual dobro for performances of the traditional “Peggy-O,” Paul Simon’s “Graceland” and Smokies’ originals “Feathers,” “Ms. Marie,” “Carry Me,” “The City” and “Decades.”

Paul Hoffman also opted for acoustic guitar instead of his usual instrument, mandolin, for his 110-minute set. The GSBG co-founder went storyteller style as he told tales to introduce several of the songs he played. Hoffman pulled selections from Greensky’s 25-year career, including fan favorites “Reverend,” “I’d Probably Kill You,” “The Four,” “In Control” and “Handguns.” He also worked in his arrangement of Don Henley’s “End Of The Innocence” and debuted a still-untitled new song.

Hoffman revealed that Andy told him to write the new tune before bringing Dunnigan out with his dobro. The extended collaboration began with takes on GSBG songs “Lose My Way” and “Screams.” Dunnigan and phoffman continued on by covering Bob Seger’s “Against The Wind” and closed out the set with Greensky classic “Living Over.” The pair performed “Past My Prime” and the Dawes song “All Your Favorite Bands” for the encore.

The tour moves on to York, Pennsylvania tonight. Paul Hoffman and Andy Dunnigan then hit Washington D.C. on Friday, Rutland (Vermont) on Saturday and end the tour in Fall River (Massachusetts) on Sunday.
