Mavis Staples and Patty Griffin have announced the initial run of tour dates for their Sweet Harmony Soul summer tour across America. Joining the tour as opening support will be special guest Amy Helm & The Handsome Strangers. The initial run of gigs includes 12 scheduled concerts with additional dates expected to be added soon.

Staples met Griffin in 2007 when the pair recorded a song together for the Grammy-winning gospel duets album, Oh Happy Day: An All-Star Music Celebration, later issued in 2009. The first Sweet Harmony Soul tour performance takes place July 8 in Interlochen, Michigan and continues the next night in Grand Rapids. Thus far the tour also includes three dates in Colorado, as well as two in California in addition to shows in Wisconsin and Wyoming.

“What big fun we are going to have on the road when we hook up with my baby sister Patty Griffin,” said Staples. “I’m ready to roll for these dates and can’t wait to get out there with her and Amy.”

“Mavis is such a rare, important role model, and her legacy is still going strong,” said Griffin. “She’s still out there talking the talk and walking the walk.  Anytime I get the chance to be around Mavis, I grab it.”
