Rising UK artist Paris Paloma made her U.S. television debut on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Wednesday. Paloma performed her breakout single, “labour,” backed by the Resistance Revival Chorus
“labour” appears on Paloma’s debut album Cacophony, which arrived on August 30, 2024. However, Paris found viral success with “labour” in 2023. Last summer, she unveiled a live performance video for “labour” through Vevo’s DSCVR series.

“labour” takes a scathing look at gender inequality, namely in the historical roles of women as Paloma sings in the song: “therapist, mother, maid, nymph then a virgin, nurse then a servant.” Paris commented on how she saw “labour” impacting listeners in a 2024 NME interview:
“I think I want them to feel heard, or held, and whether they’re listening to something like ‘labour’ and it’s something so angry, I want them to feel like their anger is valid. If it’s something else, I want them to feel comforted, if it makes them cry I want them to feel held while they do that. I hope that my music can serve as a vehicle for a protective sphere in which to feel any emotions that need to be felt.”
For her U.S. television debut on Colbert, Paloma enlisted the Resistance Revival Chorus to perform “labour.”
“What a privilege to perform with the Resistance Revival Chorus on [Colbert],” Paris wrote in a social media post. “Thank you so much for everyone who watched. I’m so proud and happy.”
