Papir: VI

Back in the spring, we had three weeks worth of sweet new tunes from Europe and I think it’s time to take another trip across the Atlantic. Like we did in the spring, we’ll start up north. For some strange reason, Denmark has been in the news lately, which is a good excuse to check in on some of our favorite Danish musicians. Have you heard the new ripper from RecommNeds favorite Papir yet? These Copenhagen jammers are the crème de la crème of Eurojams and their sixth full-length, VI, released back in May find the trio as good as ever. Four extended tracks, four extended journeys of guitar/bass/drums, one must-hear album. Do it now!

Jonas Munk & Nicklas Sørensen: Always Already Here

Staying in Copenhagen, and sticking with Papir for a moment, Always Already Here is a collaboration between Nicklas Sørensen from Papir and Jonas Munk from Causa Sui. The pair layer synthesizers and guitars to create some brilliant brainfood. Part composition, part in-studio improvisation, these five tracks out on El Paraiso combine slow-evolving ambient, hypnotic groove and am-I-dreaming psychedelia with some stunning results. Check it out, I think you’ll dig!

Rymden: Reflections and Odysseys

Staying on the collaborative theme, with a little change of pace, we move to Scandinavia for a new “supergroup” of sorts. Rymden is a collaboration of Norwegian pianist Bugge Wesseltoft and the rhythm section from legendary Swedish piano trio e.s.t, Magnus Ostrom on drums and Dan Berglund on bass. These three have their own storied careers at the forefont of cutting-edge Scandinavian jazz. Together they take the piano trio to some far-out places as only these three can. “Rymden” means “outer space” and the album title speaks for itself, Rymden transcends their genre and expands it from within. A must-hear for jazzheads and serious music lovers who don’t think of themselves as jazzheads.

Death & Vanilla: Are You A Dreamer?

Do you guys know Death & Vanilla? From the Swedish city of Malmö, the now-a-trio group has a sound from not only another place, but another era: dreamy, haunting and psychedelic. Their newest release Are You A Dreamer? is a soundtrack to a film that’s part noir, part thriller, part Lynchian brainteaser. This album is a mood, good or bad is up to you. Give it a listen and figure it out. Enjoy these picks for now, back with more Eurogoodness next week.
