The Trey Anastasio Band kicked off a 12-show fall tour last night at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, where the Phish front man’s solo ensemble mixed newer originals with classic TAB material and covers.

Anastasio and his band started the show with one of the original Trey solo songs -“First Tube.” Next up was “Burn That Bridge” from Hands On A Hardbody, which hadn’t been performed by TAB since November 11, 2011. “Cayman Review” was followed by “Bounce,” the first single off the new Trey album Paper Wheels. “It Makes No Difference” by The Band was the evening’s first cover and returned to action for the first time since October 12, 2011. Another newer original, “Flying Machine,” led into the classic “Money Love & Change.” A performance of Page McConnell’s “Magilla” gave way to a first set-closing sequence of “Alaska,” the Natalie Cressman-sung Ana Tijoux cover “1977” and “Sand.”

“Sometime After Sunset,” a Trey/Tom original debuted back in January, kicked off the second set. TAB drew from different eras throughout the second set with “Alive Again,” “Simple Twist Up Dave” and “Push On Through The Day” from the band’s early days; “Shine,” “Wherever You Find It” and “Goodbye Head” from the 70 Volt Parade years and more recent TAB repertoire additions “Greyhound Rising,” “Frost” and “Architect” joining a selection of covers that included Toots & The Maytals’ “Sweet and Dandy” and Gorillaz’s “Clint Eastwood.” Anastasio took an opportunity to introduce his band as the ensemble vamped on the Gorillaz’s tune. Trey and TAB even worked a portion of the Looney Tunes theme song into the introductions during the extended “Clint Eastwood”:
