Following up on a promise to release new music in 2016, Nine Inch Nails will issue a new EP Not The Actual Events on December 23. The 5-song EP is currently available for pre-order on vinyl and hi-res digital via the band’s website. Frontman Trent Reznor has also announced a re-issue project with Broken, The Downward Spiral and The Fragile available for pre-order on vinyl. Plus, a limited edition version of The Fragile dubbed The Fragile: Deviations 1 will feature a whopping 37 bonus tracks. It will only be available on vinyl.
Not The Actual Events is the first collection of new NIN music since 2013’s Hesitation Marks. Reznor worked with longtime collaborator and a man he describes as his “official bandmate,” Atticus Ross on the EP. “It’s an unfriendly, fairly impenetrable record that we needed to make. It’s an EP because that ended up being the proper length to tell that story,” Reznor said as per Pitchfork.
“We want to present the catalog as it was intended to be, with no compromises. That means a careful remastering of the audio from the original sources, a painstaking recreation of the artwork, pristine materials, some surprises and an insane attention to detail that you probably won’t notice…but it matters to us. No extra bullshit and gimmicks – the ‘real’ records in their truest form,” Reznor said of the re-issue project.
Read the “mission statement” for the vinyl releases:
IN THESE TIMES OF NEARLY UNLIMITED ACCESS TO ALL THE MUSIC IN THE WORLD, WE’VE COME TO APPRECIATE THE VALUE AND BEAUTY OF THE PHYSICAL OBJECT. OUR STORE’S FOCUS IS ON PRESENTING THESE ITEMS TO YOU. VINYL HAS RETURNED TO BEING A PRIORITY FOR US – NOT JUST FOR THE WARMTH OF THE SOUND, BUT THE INTERACTION IT DEMANDS FROM THE LISTENER. THE CANVAS OF ARTWORK, THE WEIGHT OF THE RECORD, THE SMELL OF THE VINYL, THE DROPPING OF THE NEEDLE, THE DIFFICULTY OF SKIPPING TRACKS, THE CHANGING OF SIDES, THE SECRETS HIDDEN WITHIN, AND HAVING A PHYSICAL OBJECT THAT EXISTS IN THE REAL WORLD WITH YOU… ALL PART OF THE EXPERIENCE AND MAGIC.
DIGITAL FORMATS AND STREAMING ARE GREAT AND CERTAINLY CONVENIENT, BUT THE IDEAL WAY I’D HOPE A LISTENER EXPERIENCE MY MUSIC IS TO GRAB A GREAT SET OF HEADPHONES, SIT WITH THE VINYL, DROP THE NEEDLE, HOLD THE JACKET IN YOUR HANDS LOOKING AT THE ARTWORK (WITH YOUR FUCKING PHONE TURNED OFF) AND GO ON A JOURNEY WITH ME. -TRENT REZNOR
Note those ordering the EP on vinyl will receive a high resolution digital download at 12:01 a.m. PT on December 23 followed by the vinyl in Spring 2017.
