Nine Inch Nails kicked off their first tour since 2018 at Red Hat Amphitheater in Raleigh, North Carolina on Thursday. Trent Reznor and company dusted off “Every Day Is Exactly the Same” and unveiled a David Bowie classic for the tour opener.

NIN got things underway with four songs from 1999’s The Fragile beginning with “Somewhat Damaged” followed by “The Day The World Went Away,” “The Frail” and “The Wretched.” Reznor also dipped into material from his 1994 LP The Downward Spiral with “March Of The Pigs,” “Piggy,” “Closer” and “The Becoming.”

Following “This Isn’t The Place” from the 2017 EP Add Violence, Nine Inch Nails performed the favorite “Everyday Is Exactly The Same” for the first time in 16 years. The song appears on the 2005 album With Teeth and NIN last performed the tune on April 1, 2006, as per SetlistFM.

Nine Inch Nails then offered two David Bowie songs. Reznor and Bowie were collaborators and close friends. The first Bowie song came in the form of 1997’s “I’m Afraid Of Americans.” Reznor co-produced a single version of the song and also appeared in the video. Naturally, NIN has covered “I’m Afraid Of Americans” before but have not played it since 2018.

Next, Reznor and company unveiled Bowie’s “Fashion,” from the 1980 album Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps).. Trent has said Scary Monsters was the album that got him into Bowie. While Reznor and collaborator Atticus Ross performed “Fashion” for a Bowie tribute, last night marked the first time NIN has performed the 1980 Bowie cut.
