The first annual Groundhog Day House Party at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, California took place last night and ended with a pair of sets from Phil Lesh & Friends. The Grateful Dead bassist was joined by guitarists Jackie Greene and Scott Law, multi-instrumentalist Jason Crosby, vocalist Nicki Bluhm and drummer Alex Koford for the Phil & Friends’ portion of the evening.

The sextet mixed classics from the Grateful Dead’s live repertoire with a handful of choice covers featuring vocals from Bluhm. Nicki led the group through versions of Linda Ronstadt’s “You’re No Good,” Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” and Joni Mitchell’s “Free Man In Paris.” The first set also included a cover of Johnny Cash & June Carter Cash’s “Jackson” sung by Nicki and Jackie, while the second set featured the famed “Scarlet” > “Fire” pairing as well as a “Slipknot!” > “Franklin’s” sans “Help On The Way.” Phil and the rest of the ensemble brought the evening to a close with “Not Fade Away.”

On a more humorous note, Lesh & Friends nodded to the 1993 film Groundhog Day as there were numerous points throughout the show when the sound man would play a pre-recorded alarm clock effect leading Nicki and Jackie to sing a few bars of “I’ve Got You Babe.” Attendees were also treated to performances from Midnight North, Ross James’ Radio Galaxy and a surprise acoustic set from Nicki Bluhm, Alex Koford, Jackie Greene & Scott Law.
