Late beloved rocker Joe Strummer’s work outside of fronting The Clash will be collected in a compilation for the first time. The box set Joe Strummer 001 will be issued by Ignition Records on September 28 featuring Strummer’s backing bands The 101ers and The Mescaleros, each of his solo albums, as well as soundtrack work and an entire new album of previously unreleased songs.

Following his death in 2002 at the age of just 50, a massive trove of Strummers’ personal archive of recordings was discovered in “barns full of writings and tapes stored in his back garden.” Strummer’s widow Luce Strummer and Robert Gordon McHarg III oversaw the archiving and compiling of the Joe Strummer 001 project. Acclaimed engineer Peter J. Moore remastered each of the tracks in the collection at the E. Room in Toronto. During Moore’s restoration he made a curious discovery:

On going through cassettes and recording tapes it was discovered that Joe was rather frugal and keen on hiding tracks. On cassettes he would leave 20 minutes between songs. On the 1″ 8 track recordings it was discovered there were hidden tracks superimposed onto each other. For example tracks 1-4 were taken by one song and tracks 5-8 by two other songs which were thought when played back to be caused by tape denigration until the tapes went to Peter J. Moore who was able to separate one song from another.

Offered in a variety of editions and formats, each Joe Strummer 001 release comes with an album of never-before-heard recordings including early demos of “This Is England” (entitled “Czechoslovak Song/Where Is England”) and “Letsagetabitarockin” (recorded in Elgin Avenue in 1975), along with outtakes from Sid & Nancy featuring The Clash’s Mick Jones and unreleased songs “Rose Of Erin,” “The Cool Impossible” and one of Strummer’s final recordings “London Is Burning” (an alternative/early version of “Burnin’ Street” from Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros’ last album Streetcore).
